Can I connect my dishwasher to an artificial water softening unit?

In order to provide satisfactory rinsing results, the dishwasher requires soft water, otherwise water stains will be left behind on the dishes and interior containers. If the water supply exceeds a certain level of hardness it must be softened. This is achieved by adding a special salt to the water softener inside the dishwasher.

The water softener, that is the required amount of salt, is set up according to how hard the water supply is. This becomes a lot harder to control when the dishwasher is connected to an artificial water softening unit and hence poor wash results.

Therefore, We do not recommend connecting your dishwasher to an artificial water softening unit since this could adversely effect performance. It is recommended that you connect to a cold water supply.

Whilst dishwashers will operate in conjunction with artificial water softening unit for best results we recommend connecting dishwashers to the cold water mains supply and utilising the softening unit within the dishwasher itself, which has been specifically designed to produce extremely good results. If this is not possible the following points should be remembered:

1. Connection is only possible to a water-softening unit if it is an ioniser type. I.e. one where salt is added. All other types are not suitable

2. The Aqua strip test should be carried out on the softened supply to ascertain whether or not salt needs to be added to the dishwasher or whether the setting on the dishwasher needs to be adjusted. If the water is soft enough then no salt needs to be added to the dishwasher.

3. The artificial water-softening unit needs to be functioning correctly at all times. The salt level needs to be regularly checked to ensure the unit is functioning correctly.

In certain instances it may be possible that etching and damage to dishes and glassware may occur if either the water is too soft or too hard. As a manufacturer we would not accept any responsibility for damage caused to items as a result of the dishwasher being connected to artificially softened water.
